At Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., the numbers tell the story. The Chinese e-commerce company has more than 334 million active users. It processes more than 14 billion transactions each year. Annual sales transactions at the 16-year-old company exceed $296 billion.

The same goes for Alibaba’s September 2014 initial public offering. The IPO, on the New York Stock Exchange, was the largest in history, raising $25 billion. The company ended its first day of trading with a market capitalization of $231 billion.
