At Diversity Lab, we are often asked: “Why do you focus your work on building cultures of equity and inclusion within the legal profession? Why not also seek to diversify and create more equitable cultures in the medical field, finance and the many other professions that could benefit?”

Our reason is simple: Equity in the legal profession will lead to greater equity in our workplaces, communities and the world. Lawyers often have a larger societal footprint than other professional cohorts, typically branching out from their beginnings in private practice to take on roles where their decisions reverberate massively across the public and private sectors. From Alexander Hamilton to Kamala Harris, lawyers have populated the rooms “where it happens”—the courthouses and legislatures, the corporate conference rooms, and the spires of academia.
