As the Michigan Supreme Court last week worked to appoint new and existing members of the state judiciary’s Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, one justice remained opposed to the commission’s purpose and a recently proposed strategic plan for the group.

The DEI Commission, which is co-chaired by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth M. Welch and retired Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Cynthia Stephens, was created by an administrative order in January 2022, to work toward “the elimination of demographic and other disparities within the Michigan judiciary and justice system.”
