Proposed changes to Title IX were released by the DOE in June 2022 on the 50th anniversary of when the original Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 took effect. Those proposed changes racked up more than 240,000 comments by the time the open public comment period closed. In April 2023, the department proposed a set of changes to Title IX athletics regulations, which received another 150,000 comments. The potential changes included strengthened protections for students who experience sexual harassment and assault at school and the protection of LGBTQI+ students from discrimination.
