A federal judge has denied a motion for class certification and dismissed a complaint brought by Liberty University students seeking a refund of various fees and room and board they paid for the Spring 2020 semester after the campus closed during the outbreak of COVID-19.
Three anonymous students—identified only in court documents as Students A, B and D—at the Lynchburg, Virginia-based college filed the complaint in April 2020 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia. The students sought to recover the costs of services and activities for the spring 2020 academic semester and alleged that they lost the benefits of those services and activities on account of Liberty’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
