A report delivered to the Washington state Legislature found that people of color and those of low socioeconomic status generally remain underrepresented among respondents to jury summons, the state courts announced in a press release last month.
Washington state lawmakers passed a bill in 2021 that required the Administrative Office of the Courts to provide “all courts with an electronic demographic survey for jurors who begin a jury term,” with the aim of collecting data on race, ethnicity, age, sex, employment status, educational attainment and income. The question central to the survey was whether the jurors were representative of the county populations where they were selected.
