While widespread associate layoffs aren’t yet happening in Canada, the glory days of big (or any) signing and retention bonuses in the so-called war for associate talent are gone, as firms get more strategic in their hiring.

“The Canadian option to go and get an offer in the U.S. almost certainly dried up from what we’ve seen as well,” said Mark Fenwick, vice president of corporate and professional services at Impact Recruitment in Vancouver.
