Former President Barack Obama had the authority under the Antiquities Act to expand the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument in southwestern Oregon, which placed limitations on areas of land that were once earmarked for timber production, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held last week.
In 2017, Obama issued the proclamation to expand the acreage of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which overlapped with timberlands regulated by the Oregon and California Railroad and Coos Bay Wagon Road Grant Lands Act (O&C Act), which addresses the use of timberlands in the southwest corner of Oregon.
