The Washington Court of Appeals partially upheld a trial court ruling with regard to what information is privileged under the state’s Reporter Shield Law, prompting attorneys on both sides to frame the decision as a win for their clients.

In a Jan. 10 opinion penned by Judge Robert Lawrence-Berrey, the appeals court partially reversed the trial court’s protective order in a case involving a former Spokane County sergeant, the Spokane County sheriff and the executive editor of local newspaper the Spokesman-Review.
