The recession’s not here yet. Data released Thursday from the Bureau of Economic Analysis indicates that the U.S. economy grew by 2.9% in the fourth quarter. “We’re at the phase of this post-pandemic recovery where the economy is gloriously, splendidly… boring,” University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers tweeted Thursday morning.

But another positive report isn’t necessarily going to silence the pessimistic chatter about the direction of the economy that’s been pervasive really since last spring: “the vibes recession,” as a number of pundits have called it.
