Seattle’s public school district filed a lawsuit in federal court against multiple social media platforms earlier this month alleging the companies’ culpability for students’ decline in mental health directly affects the school’s ability to “fulfill its educational mission,” the complaint said.
The federal complaint, filed Jan. 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, names Google’s parent company, Alphabet, along with YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Meta Platform, and TikTok and its owner, ByteDance, amongst others, as co-defendants.
