The murder of five Dallas police officers by a sniper Thursday night sparked widespread condemnation, dismay and sadness in the aftermath of the tragic shooting of two black men this week in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Lawyers were among the first to weigh in, as the American Bar Association’s president Paulette Brown of Locke Lord issued a statement on the matter. But those lawyers who once wore the badge, many of whom spoke with sibling publication the New York Law Journal and other reporters throughout the network of publications owned by The American Lawyer’s parent company, ALM Media LLC, provided some insight into the day-to-day challenges facing those in law enforcement.
