Thomas Schweich, a former Bryan Cave partner serving as Missouri’s state auditor, died Thursday morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his home in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that several minutes after Schweich placed a call to an editor for the newspaper’s editorial page, police were called to his home as a result of a “medical situation.” Schweich, 54, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and then pronounced dead. Clayton police are investigating the matter, but have said publicly that the cause of death is believed to be suicide.
