Those lists of “family friendly” or “women friendly” law firms drive me bananas. Often, I’m scratching my head about how certain firms get on those lists. Plus, who the hell knows what “friendliness” means in big law firms? Does it mean that firms are truly cool about lawyers who make their families a priority? Or does it mean having wonderful policies on the books that few people actually use?

I suspect it’s the latter. But young lawyers want to believe work/life balance is possible, and Big Law doesn’t mind playing along.
