The scramble for dominance among top commercial litigation financers stepped up a notch this week, as two leading funders announced that they are hiring Big Law veterans and expanding their operations in North America.

On Tuesday, U.K.-listed Burford Capital LLC announced plans to begin backing intellectual property matters—an area ripe for funding that the litigation financing pioneer has previously avoided. Burford also announced that it has hired Justin Daniels, most recently an IP litigation partner at Proskauer, to help spearhead the effort.
