When Boies, Schiller & Flexner partner Stuart Singer learned that thousands of poor children were struggling to access health and dental care under Florida’s Medicaid system, he reacted just like a lawyer: “This is exactly the kind of case we should be doing,” he remembers thinking.

That was more than 10 years ago. Since then, Singer, fellow Fort Lauderdale partner Carl Goldfarb and others at the firm have worked alongside Philadelphia’s Public Interest Law Center (PILC) to pursue a class action against agencies involved with Florida’s Medicaid system. A breakthrough came in April, when the state agreed to bring key aspects of its Medicaid program in line with nationwide standards.
