Steering Committee Members Selected for Gulf Coast Oil Spill Suits
A U.S. district court judge in New Orleans has picked 15 lawyers to lead a plaintiffs' steering committee in multi-district oil spill litigation against BP and several other defendants stemming from the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico last April.For six years, Apollo Group fought whistle-blower allegations that its subsidiary the University of Phoenix violated government rules for accepting federal aid. On Monday, Apollo's lawyers at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and attorneys for the plaintiffs from Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein finally agreed on a price to put the litigation to rest.
Bruce Simon of Pearson Simon, co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs along with with Richard Heimann of Lieff Cabraser, called the jury's decision "magnificent." But Toshiba says the verdict won't cost the company a dime.
The court didn't buy the company's claim that data packets intercepted by its Street View cars were "radio communications" not covered by federal law.
