EU Court Orders Microsoft to Divulge Trade Secrets
A Wednesday ruling by a European Union court thwarts Microsoft's attempt to delay, pending appeal, implementation of the EU's landmark antitrust decision in March. The decision demanded the software giant release trade secrets to competitors and offer Windows operating system software stripped of its Media Player. The company has already paid a record $666 million fine. Microsoft said it hopes to reopen settlement talks. GC Donald Rosenberg's sudden exit from Apple shook Silicon Valley Friday -- as did the news that his high-profile replacement is Oracle Corp.'s Daniel Cooperman. Rosenberg, who joined Apple last fall as the company grappled with stock option backdating trouble, will stay in California at San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., a company with its own share of legal troubles, including a wide array of litigation against rival Broadcom. In an effort to pare down legal bills, Silicon Valley giant Cisco Systems Inc. is seeking to replace hourly billing rates from outside counsel with more creative -- and cheaper -- fee arrangements. The days of "blank checks are over," said Robert Barr, Cisco's vice president of intellectual property and worldwide patent counsel.
