Disgusted with decades of violence stemming from a drug war seemingly without end, Juan Francisco Torres Landa teamed up four years ago with three other friends and social activists to form the Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use, known by its Spanish acronym, SMART.

On Wednesday, SMART won a landmark 88-page ruling from Mexico’s Supreme Court that could eventually smooth the way for the widespread legalization of marijuana in the country. The 4-1 decision, which made headlines around the world, currently applies only to Torres Landa and his three fellow plaintiffs.
