Law firms that are hired to respond to data breaches can face a cultural and technical divide—between the lawyers on one side, and IT staff in the trenches trying to locate and stop the breach on the other.

In an effort to bridge that divide, Covington & Burling has hired Stephen Surdu, a cybersecurity consultant formerly with security company Mandiant in Washington, D.C. Surdu, who is not a lawyer, will be part of the new cybersecurity response team at the firm, which has hired at least two other cybersecurity experts in recent months.
