Until last year, Fisher & Phillips was like most firms when it comes to preparedness for a sudden heart attack in the office—that is, not especially prepared. But after the labor and employment firm’s Kansas City managing partner nearly lost his wife to tragedy, it has made readiness a point of pride.

The partner, Jim Holland, was at dinner at local restaurant last January when his wife, Nancy, failed to return from the restroom. He went to check on her and found her collapsed on the floor, suffering sudden cardiac arrest due to a blood clot in her heart.
