As law firms straddle the globe, more and more lawyers are building lives and careers far from the relatives and friends they grew up with.

That was the situation that confronted Kirkland & Ellis private equity partner Michel Debolt, a son of rural Illinois who was based in the firm’s Hong Kong office after working for several years in London. Hoping to find a solution for expats like himself, Debolt left Kirkland last month to found a startup meant to bridge the gap between loved ones living across cultures and continents.
