Two years ago, lawyers James “Jim” Wooley and Heather Kimmel joined in the nation’s shock at Amanda Berry’s harrowing escape from a decade of crime and captivity inside what would become known as Cleveland’s “house of horrors.”
Former school bus driver Ariel Castro kidnapped Berry in April 2003, the day before her 17th birthday, and Berry spent the next 10 years enduring unimaginable abuse inside Castro’s home on the city’s west side. She was rescued on May 6, 2013, along with Gina DeJesus, who was taken at the age of 14 in 2004, and Michelle Knight, abducted at the age of 21 in 2002. With them was Berry’s 6-year-old daughter, Jocelyn, who was fathered by the women’s captor.
