The Law Society of Hong Kong on Thursday passed its first ever no-confidence motion against a sitting president, demanding Ambrose Lam step down for making comments in support of a controversial white paper issued by the Chinese government.
The white paper, issued June 10, highlighted China’s influence on Hong Kong courts and called for Hong Kong judges to be patriotic toward China. Days later Lam, co-founding partner at Lam, Lee & Lai, had praised the white paper, saying it was “a very important political document,” and agreeing that judges as Hong Kong’s administrators should love China.
