    Fascinating, but not surprising! Advocating for diversity hurts your career progression. My research on African American executives (http://ow.ly/yr2ci) suggests that knowing how to effectively navigate within the majority (typically white & male in the USA) culture leads to career advancement (others things being equal). It doesn‘t mean giving up your identity. It means knowing which battles to fight and how to fight them is paramount to being effective in this kind of organizational environment. However, that is only a third of the story. Organizations must support diversity from the top down in its practices including compensation strategies. The last pillar is the manager/leader. He/she must diversify (irony intended) the criteria they use for selecting internal talent. Organizations need to change, but that is a slow process. In the meantime, a more comprehensive model for developing minority executives across the individual, the organization, and the manager/leader will help improve the situations depicted in this research.
