In some ways, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan name partner Kathleen Sullivan has been tasked with an analogous role for Pacific Gas & Electric: that is, to stop a potential conflagration (at least on one front) in its tracks.

Sullivan, who declined comment, is representing the utility giant on appeal in litigation stemming from an earlier—and smaller—fire in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills. In June, a state court judge ruled PG&E is liable for damages in the 2015 Butte fire that destroyed 549 houses and killed two people. The fire was started by a pine tree that came in contact with a PG&E power line, state investigators found.
