It's hard to defend any judge who thinks 60 days in jail is an appropriate punishment for a father who raped his 12-year-old daughter. Still, there's something ominous about what seems to be a new pattern: a judge issues a lenient but legal sentence, and the mob descends.

The sentence is abhorrent: a Montana man got 60 days in county jail (43 after time served) plus probation after admitting that he raped his 12-year-old daughter.
It’s the handiwork of Montana State District Judge John C. McKeon, who disregarded a plea deal that the man serve 25 years in prison. Instead, he imposed a 30-year suspended sentence plus community-based treatment. The man also has to register as a sex offender.
