Earlier this month, Silicon Valley stalwart Fenwick & West opened a long anticipated office in New York with about 10 lawyers. The new office was a big development for the roughly 300-lawyer firm, which, apart from a small outpost in Shanghai, had stuck to the West Coast.

But in fact the Am Law 100 firm already had two partners living and working in New York, said Mark Stevens, who is heading up Fenwick’s new East Coast base. That’s because the firm has long had a policy that, within reason, its lawyers can work from wherever they like.
