The man on our cover this month, Lamar Roberson, is not a lawyer. But he’s a better booster for the legal profession than any lawyer could be.
Roberson, of Savannah, Georgia, served 25 years of a lifetime sentence without parole for selling crack, one of thousands of prisoners subject to draconian drug sentences laws. Then lawyers with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan filed a clemency petition on his behalf—part of a massive effort by the private bar to seek the release of low-level drug offenders who had already served significant time. Long story short, Roberson was released in February. “I’ve got a lot of people counting on me to make it,” he says. “I won’t let them down.”
