A small but growing number of large law firms are outsourcing their law libraries to an independent provider, with New York-based Herrick Feinstein the latest to take that step.

Herrick contracted in November with LibSource, an information services company based in Los Angeles, to run its law library operations, replacing three library staff members. The New York office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy contracted with the company starting last August. LibSource also counts Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman; Manatt, Phelps & Phillips; and Best Best & Krieger among its clients. (Other library outsourcing companies include Library Systems & Services, which says it mainly works with municipalities, and Professionals Library Service Inc., which declined to disclose any clients.)
