    And then some particular lawyers are outright violent. In the office and at off-site events associated with work. This includes actual physical attacks as well as overt threats of sexual assault. It‘s not just pro athletes who abuse steroids and stimulants.

    My simple life philosophy, stated below, is not limited to big law firms. If you don‘t like the boss, move on. S/he owns the joint. If partners are, to use Socrates‘ squishy New Age phrase, "toxic," their worlds will eventually implode around them. Why would a sensible person -- with an education and options -- want to be within 10 miles of the scene when that happens? Life‘s too short for angst, office intrigue, the filing of complaints with HR and/or I‘m-too-soft-to-take-it lawsuits. When you own the firm you can fire all the toxic jerks that rub you wrong. Till then, suck it up and deal or move on.

    While I agree with Plato up to a point, there is a danger of blaming the victim here. The article suggests this when it talks about controlling your own reactions and reminding yourself why you chose Big Law in the first place. These people are toxic, to their colleagues, their firms, and ultimately themselves. The rationalizations for their behavior are simply false. Two apt quotes: "Rudeness is the weak man‘s imitation of strength." (Eric Hoffer). "Time wounds all heels." (Alice Roosevelt Longworth).

    If your boss is a jerk, go work someplace else. Start your own firm, join a company or a nonprofit. But whatever you do, please stop whining. Life‘s a bitch and then we die.
