Has Ted Cruz been sneaking into elite New York law firms to raise money? Let’s see a show of hands if you’ve sighted him in your conference room recently.

I’m asking because Cruz was spotted in the midtown office of Sullivan & Cromwell in December. Actually, not just spotted but trotted out. Despite expressing disgust at “New York values” during the last Republican debate, Cruz happily wooed potential supporters in Manhattan. According to Politico (which got its hands on a secret recording), attendees—who were described as socially liberal but conservative on fiscal and national security issues—coughed up some hefty amounts to share breathing space with the Tea Party darling: $10,800 to serve on the host committee, $2,700 for a VIP reception and $1,000 for lunch.
