When I was growing up, I couldn’t imagine a bigger chasm between the past and the present than my parents’ youth, without TV, and my own, with the RCA color console that introduced me to everything from “Sesame Street” to “Saturday Night Live.” (I was wrong, of course. My sons marvel that I could have grown up without a laptop or a smartphone.)
I was thinking about past and present as we created this issue, which explores some of the broader themes of the year.
