Women are idiots. When work conflicts with family, they’ll raise their hand to work reduced hours, take a pay cut and put their careers in limbo. Men, however, will do no such thing. They’ll act as if work is life itself—as they quietly leave early to play golf or coach kids’ soccer.

In high-powered professions where working an 80-hour week is a status symbol, men are creaming women in the career game. One reason: Men are much more likely to fake long hours. That’s essentially the finding of a new study by Erin Reid, a professor at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. The study, which looks at an international consulting firm, finds that both male and female consultants loathe long hours. (The firm kept track of hours, though client bills weren’t based on them.)
