Catching a push pass from U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, former Crowell & Moring partner Kelly Currie is now leading the case of a lifetime, just eight months after rejoining the U.S. Department of Justice. Currie, the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, is overseeing the investigation and prosecution of nine Fédération Internationale de Football Association officials and five corporate executives. Now it’s up to him to move the ball forward.

When Currie and Lynch, who had been U.S. attorney for the Eastern District before ascending to her current role, announced the charges on May 27, the 47-count indictment read more like an excerpt from “The Godfather” than a probe into a soccer association. It “alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States,” said Lynch, and “spans at least two generations of soccer officials who, as alleged, have abused their positions of trust to acquire millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.”
