Former Sidley Austin real estate partner Lee Smolen has been suspended from practicing law for one year after admitting to faking $69,000 in expenses, Illinois’ Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission announced last week. Smolen must also complete a year of continuous treatment with a psychiatrist.

Smolen resigned from Sidley in 2012, but was hired by DLA Piper in February of 2013. A DLA Piper spokesman said in a statement that Smolen withdrew from the firm on Feb. 27 in anticipation of the disciplinary commission’s decision.
