More than four years after Gigi Jordan, a multimillionaire former pharmaceutical executive, was found rambling incoherently beside her 8-year-old son’s lifeless body in New York’s Peninsula Hotel, a Manhattan jury is finally hearing murder charges against her.

In opening statements before State Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon on Wednesday, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bogdanos said Jordan forced a fatal concoction of prescription pills, orange juice and possibly vodka into the autistic boy’s mouth. An investigation found Jordan brought 5,918 pills into the hotel room—including Ambien, Xanax, hydrocodone and Prozac—along with a pill crusher and syringe.
