Hinshaw & Culbertson, a 460-lawyer regional Am Law 200 firm based out of Chicago, has agreed to merge on Oct. 1 with California’s Barger & Wolen, a 45-lawyer shop that also has outposts in New York and London.

The deal, which was approved by the partnerships of both firms last Thursday, will help Hinshaw pick up its first overseas office and bolster the latter’s insurance, reinsurance and regulatory practice group. Donald Mrozek, who has led Hinshaw for more than 20 years and was reelected in 2012 to another three-year term as firm chair, says that the merger announced this week stems from a strategic plan adopted by his firm to focus on certain practice areas and bolster its presence in certain business centers.
