Where do drones, from toy planes to actual aircraft, fit in government regulations and licensing schemes? What kind of licensing does one need to operate an unmanned aerial system? Mark Dombroff, a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge, takes on this issue in a recent post on the Plane-ly Spoken blog.

“While the regulator hasn’t spoken definitively on the subject, it has suggested that if you want to operate a UAS [unmanned aerial system] for business or commercial use, you will need to possess either a commercial pilot’s license or, at a minimum, a private pilot’s certificate,” he said, noting that the Federal Aviation Administration will likely address the issue in full this fall.
