Momentum is gaining in the Legislature and in the bar for a proposed constitutional amendment to end the 70-and-out rule of mandatory retirement for New Jersey judges.

With people living longer and healthier, there is a growing recognition that the age cap—which might have made sense in 1947—no longer has any empirical rationale. That, and the increased pressure now being brought to bear on the state’s pension system, may combine to create the perfect climate for change.
