Just what is a “workday”? Though shrouded in a philosophical tone, for the purposes of calculating employee pay, the question has real-world ramifications. Nicole Bernabo of Robinson & Cole luckily has a rundown of what “work” is, specifically in the context of manufacturing, in this post.

“In general, a ‘workday’ means the period between the time on any particular day when such employee commences his/her ‘principal activity’ and the time on that day at which he/she ceases such principal activity or activities,” she says, going on to note that it’s not always that simple. For instance, an employee can start work before and work after his/her scheduled shift, which “traps” employers up, she says.
