Armstrong World Industries Inc. designs and manufactures floors and ceilings. Based in Lancaster, Pa., Armstrong operates 35 plants in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, France, Germany, India and the United Kingdom, with about 8,700 employees. In 2013, the company reported revenue of about $2.7 billion. The employment trend has been up as Armstrong buys plants overseas, general counsel Mark Hershey said. The company began in 1860 as a two-man cork-cutting shop in Pittsburgh and didn’t sell flooring until 1909.
