The resignation of Target Corp. CEO Gregg Steinhafel, announced on Monday, is the latest bad news in a rough stretch for the retailer. The company started out the year recovering from a massive holiday season data breach impacting up to 110 million customers, and without a doubt shaking the faith of some loyal shoppers regarding the safety of their credit card information.

The breach spotlighted in a very public way the challenges faced by U.S. companies in keeping their essential data safe from cyberattacks. Although there may not be a single company policy or technical fix that will stop every cyber bad guy or protect every piece of valuable data, one way to be better prepared is to connect the people in the organization who have the most involvement in data usage and security under the umbrella of one committee.
