As big law firms mourn, the last vestiges of the billable hour model—litigation fees—are beginning to give way to alternative billing arrangements.

“We are extremely close to the tipping point in the legal services market on this issue,” Amar Sarwal, vice president and chief legal strategist for the Association of Corporate Counsel, recently told the Washington Post. “The billable hour’s day has passed. It’ll still be a part of the market but it won’t be a leading part of it.”
