The Internal Revenue Service released guidance on Tuesday that deems Bitcoin to be a digital representation of value, therefore allowing the virtual currency to be treated as property for tax purposes, the New York Times reports.
According to the IRS guidance, Bitcoin—and any other virtual currency that does not hold the status of legal tender in any jurisdiction—will be subject to the same reporting and withholding requirements as comparable transactions in dollars, the Times reports.
