Advising one of the nation’s largest and most famous media companies or facing off against the U.S. Department of Justice to protect reporters’ First Amendment rights—it’s all in a day’s work for Karen Kaiser, the newly minted general counsel and corporate secretary for The Associated Press. Kaiser, who was promoted to the GC role in early February, has spent about five years at the global multiplatform news network, first as assistant general counsel and later as associate general counsel.
Kaiser replaces interim general counsel Laura Malone and will head a legal department of around five attorneys split between the AP’s New York City headquarters and London. In her new job, Kaiser told CorpCounsel.com, she will continue the First Amendment work that has occupied much her time for the last five years, but she’ll also be dealing with the many of the other diverse matters that most GCs grapple with, including transactional work and intellectual property issues.
