Telecommunications service providers and interconnected VoIP service providers take note. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires you to file your annual Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) certifications for the 2013 calendar year by March 1.

The attorneys at Covington & Burling explain that CPNI includes confidential information that a customer is made to share with a network provider simply by virtue of the carrier-customer relationship, and the FCC imposes limitations on its use and disclosure. It is a service provider’s duty to take reasonable measures to safeguard CPNI, and the provider is obligated to notify customers of any security breaches involving CPNI.
