It’s been one year since a federal judge in Washington ordered $50,000 daily sanctions against the Russian government for refusing to return thousands of Jewish religious texts seized in the early 20th century. With no resolution in sight, the plaintiffs now want Russia to pay up.
Agudas Chasidei Chabad of the United States is seeking a judgment of $14.7 million — one year’s worth of sanctions, minus a 70-day break Chabad approved to support diplomatic negotiations. That effort was unsuccessful.
