An article in the Thursday, Jan. 16 edition of the Law Journal, “City Settles Lawsuits in RNC Arrests for $18 Million,” incorrectly stated that the Law Department paid outside counsel to help with the litigation. In fact, the four firms listed, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, Proskauer Rose, Fulbright & Jaworski and Linklaters, provided their services pro bono.
The statement that New York City spent $16 million defending the cases referred to the Law Department’s estimate of its own expenditures on the litigation: roughly $9 million for “estimated” attorney fees—the salaries and hours worked by Law Department attorneys—and $7 million in costs.
