Madison, Wis.-based American Family Insurance began in 1927 as an auto insurer for farmers — drivers who had a reputation for safety because they rarely drove near accident-prone city streets and regularly put their cars on blocks for the winter. Today, the private mutual insurance company holds $6.5 billion in equity, and during 2014 will go from doing business in 19 states to operations in all 50 due to recent acquisitions. The company sells auto, home, life, umbrella, business, health, farm and ranch insurance and retirement products.
